Famous faces who’ve sported braces

When we think “Hollywood Smile” ideas of perfectly straight, bright, white and dazzling smiles come to mind.

We often forget that celebrities were once geeky teens (and even adults), at some stage, and they too are humans who need orthodontic help. While they may now possess the most beautiful smile that money can buy, all have proven that braces do indeed work!

From Serena Williams, Kylie Minogue, Emma Watson, Niell Horan and even Christiano Reinaldo, specialist orthodontic work has been put to the test to produce some of the most recognisable and gorgeous smiles we see on TV screens today.

Braces come in all shapes and forms from the traditional metal, let-me-have-every-colour-of-the-rainbow elasticated tracks; the less-visible ceramic see-through braces, the lingual braces (that sit behind your teeth) and even the popular Invisalign treatment, braces are sure to fix crooked teeth and overcrowded smiles no matter what your social or celebrity status.

Let’s look at five celebs that have given braces its noteworthy reputation and set an example for the future of orthodontics:

Kendall Jenner

Now strutting her stuff on Victoria’s Secret runway, Kendall Jenner didn’t have braces just once – but twice in her young life. Living her life constantly being filmed for her family’s reality series ‘Keeping Up with The Kardashians’, young Kendall couldn’t shy away from the public eye, even with her sightly train-tracks. Luckily the second time around, her orthodontist advised her to use the almost invisible clear aligner, often known as Invisalign. Who would have thought this geeky teen would now be the face of global fashion houses like Chanel and Estee Lauder?

Gwen Stefani

Oh she’s (not) just a girl (anymore)! Front lady for 90s punk band, No Doubt, Gwen Stefani sure has come a long way in her dress sense and even sense of self.  In 1999, Stefani managed to make braces cool. She smiled proudly on the red carpet at a Christian Dior boutique opening, sporting a mouth full of metal. Not only did Gwen wear the braces, but she also wore a huge smile the entire night, showing off those silver brackets. It was a pivotal time for teens everywhere when they realised that trips to the orthodontist wouldn’t signal the end of their social lives or constant teasing by their peers. While Gwen’s teeth didn’t have particularly noticeable gaps or misalignment, the braces helped shift her teeth into their proper position. Prior to her braces, she had a “caved in” look and her teeth appeared very small (almost like corn kernels), but wearing the braces helped make her teeth appear more prominent. Still today Gwen is praised for showing off her braces. You go girl!

Tom Cruise

Tom has one of the most famous smiles in showbiz, but he started his career with discoloured, broken, missing and misaligned teeth. He wasn’t, however, shy about flashing a set of ceramic braces during the premiere of his 2002 movie “Minority Report.” Over the years he’s had numerous orthodontic and cosmetic dental procedures to camouflage his complex problems. By the time Risky Business and the 1986 classic, Top Gun came around, everyone had noticed that his teeth were straighter. Many orthodontists say that what’s interesting about his teeth is that the midpoint between his two central upper teeth (the dental midline) did not match the midline of his face, and this gave him the appearance of a single prominent front tooth. Despite all of the dental work he’s had over the years, Tom remains quite notorious in dental and orthodontic circles for this exact reason. It just goes to show, there are some minor cosmetic imperfections that simply have to be accepted, no matter how famous you are!

Prince Harry and Prince William

Born into the spotlight, young ginger-haired Harry couldn’t shy away from his orthodontic work. Being part of the British royal family, he and his brother, William, are always required to look their best and be shining examples of upstanding citizens. Both princes wore braces as teenagers and, according to reports, both wore braces for their bottom teeth for at least a decade each. Sometimes it just takes longer to correct certain issues, and while these are extreme cases, nothing beats having the perfect smile, even if it means shying away from smiling for photos for a while. If braces, be them lingual, traditional or invisible aligners, are good enough for royalty, they’ll certainly assist the rest of us in working towards that perfect smile. All of the above goes to show that you’re never be too old to have braces and you should never feel embarrassed about wearing them as many celebrities, including royalty, sported braces themselves.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson was the perfect example of an awkward teenager who seems to experience all adolescent issues at the same time. She had braces as well as simultaneously battling acne. She did all of this whilst working hard on her acting career and still showing up for red carpet events and posing for photographs.  However, she said once her braces came off and she saw her new smile for the very first time, she realised it was worth the trouble. Emma decided to fix her moderately crooked teeth and achieve a beautiful smile with the help of an orthodontist.
